GULF BREWING COMPANY HOUSTON, TX (1933 - 1963)
With Prohibition’s repeal in sight, Howard Hughes – yes THE Howard Hughes - decided to get into the beer business. In 1933 he started Gulf Brewing Company in Houston, TX.
As the years went by Gulf Brewing Company searched for ways to expand their local market share. In the 1950s they decided to brew a new beer - heavier and darker than their normal lager. Buccaneer Beer was introduced in April 1956 – just in time for Corpus Christi’s annual “Buccaneer Days” celebration. The brewery outfitted a 65 foot schooner - renamed "Buccaneer" for the occasion. Locals and brewery employees dressed as pirates, jumped from the ship's deck, and "took over" the city to start the festival. This design is from a late 1950s beer can.
