In 1838 Toledo, Ohio was just 2 years old but already boasted a brewery known as Lehmann & Eckhardt Bros. This tiny, wood-framed structure in East Toledo eventually became The Buckeye Brewing Company.
Through the years Buckeye pursued aggressive expansion and fought fierce competition. They grew to dominate the Toledo beer market. By 1949 Buckeye was the only brewery operating in Toledo! Their local success was eventually noticed by larger, national breweries. In 1966 The Buckeye Brewing Company was purchased by Meister-Brau. Just 6 years later The Miller Brewing Company purchased Meister-Brau and decided to stop brewing Buckeye beer in Toledo. It brewed its last batch of Buckeye Beer on August 31, 1972. Miller did decide to keep the recipe for Meister-Brau Light from which Miller Lite was born! This logo comes from a Buckeye Brewing Company early 1900s etched drinking glass.
