In 1873 John Koch established the Ulmer Brewery on Russell Street in Detroit.  Just 10 years later he sold his successful brewery to August Ekhardt and Herman Becker.  The new owners renamed their new brewery E&B.  In 1891 they relocated to what is now 2437 Orleans.  Part of this historic brewery complex is now home to luxury loft condos near Detroits historic Eastern Market.

E&B was one of the few early Detroit breweries to survive until well after World War II.  Savvy advertising and an aggressive strategy of growth by merger and acquisition helped E&B survive as one of Detroits most successful breweries until they were purchased by a larger competitor in 1961.  This design comes from a 1953 beer can.
