Katz was a well-known chain of drugstores throughout the Mid-West and Mid-South. In the early 1950s they decided to sell their own brand of beer through contract-brewing agreements with several breweries across the country.
On 9/9/1954 Katz Drugstore on Lamar Avenue in Memphis, TN celebrated its grand opening with a concert in their parking lot. About 300 people were on-hand to see Elvis Presley perform from the back of a flatbed pickup truck. Another future music star was in the audience. Young Johnny Cash – fresh out of the Air Force – saw and met Elvis for the first time that day. This design was inspired by a 1950's beer can. Maybe Elvis & Johnny each enjoyed an ice-cold can of Katz Beer featuring this very logo!
