KATZ PREMIUM BEER - SOUTH BEND, INDIANA
1951-1972
Katz was a well-known chain of drugstores throughout the Mid-West and Mid-South. When they decided to sell their own brand of beer in stores they established a contract-brewing agreement with Drewrys Brewing Company of South Bend, Indiana.
On September 9, 1954 Katz Drugstore on Lamar Avenue in Memphis, TN celebrated its grand opening with a concert in their parking lot. About 300 people – mostly teenage girls – were on-hand to see an up and coming star named Elvis Presley perform his one and only hit single from the back of a flatbed pickup truck. Another future music star was in the audience. Young Johnny Cash – fresh out of the Air Force – saw and met Elvis for the first time that day.
This design was inspired by a 1950's beer can.
